Role of Smoking Beliefs, Family Environment & Peer Influence in Smoking Behavior and Wellbeing of Youth Smokers (Paperback)
The study of health impairing behaviour such as smoking, drinking and gambling etc. is an integral part of health psychology. Psychological studies of health-impairing behaviour have been carried out quite extensively on children and adolescents. Studies on health impairing behaviour of youth are very few in number.Research on health behaviour is focused more on preventive than the promotive aspect of health. In both preventive and promotive aspects of health, psychological factors play a crucial role. Smoking beliefs, family environment, peer influence, smoking behaviour and mental health constitute interesting topics of research in health psychology. A perusal of studies indicates that very little work has been done in relation to smoking beliefs, family environment, peer influence, smoking behaviour and mental health of youth. The present study is a modest attempt to address the mentioned issue and it assumed that various correlates of smoking behaviour and mental health such as smoking beliefs, motivation, family environment and peer influence may affect the health of youth. Taking these aspects into consideration, the present study was designed to study the smoking behaviour and mental health of youth, who were engaged in smoking behaviour, using a variety of smoking beliefs, motivation, family environment and peer influence measures.
